ADSL
- What
is ADSL? ADSL ("Asymmetric Digital
Subscriber Line") is a type of DSL. It works by
splitting your existing telephone line signal into
two, one for voice and the other for data. ADSL
technology can work at up to 8Mbps download
if your pockets are big enough. The
most popular services in the UK at the moment are
running at speeds of 512Kbps (approx. 10 times
faster than a modem), although speeds of up to
2Mbps from most can be obtained
if you pay more, Having said that, we've seen
download speeds of 330k and have wondered why. They
do quote contention of say 10:1 or 15:1
Upload speeds are 256Kbps
on all products and hence this is why it is
"asymmetric", because the download speed is
different to the upload speed. |

'ADSL'
in marinas
ADSL is
much cheaper abroad than in the UK. Retail prices
in Antibes, where YOG have an office, are the
equivalent of £19.99 a month. Compare that to
£27.99 a month in the UK. Attempts are
being made to get the IYCA to upgrade the phone lines to ADSL. It is not a
question of the yacht doing it, as the yacht is
actually billed by the IYCA and not France
Telecom. In the UK some marinas are going down
the wireless route but we don't see how the signal
is going to get through all those masts, unless
there are access points everywhere. Others
have failed by not making enough Access
Points, in the name of profit - the Access Points
are where the manufacturers make their money.
We know because we have done three BreezeCom (
Israeli ) courses and you can only have so
many PCs per access point.
'ADSL'
at sea
ADSL will transform
the way you and your crew
use the
Internet in the marina, and you
can still get it out at sea, by using
a Seatel Dish coupled with a GB subscription.
Download prices we've seen indicate about
$1600 per GB downloaded - but at least it is
always on. You will need to use ISDN or Fleet
for the uplink, at extra cost.
ADSL uses a separate frequency that allows
voice or fax calls on the same
landline line that you use for your
broadband connection - even if you are using the
Internet at the same time. It can save the cost of
a second line, and it will
really add a new range of
possibilities to the way you use the
NET.
YOG do not sell the big 1.6m Seatel antennas, but
work with a company who do. We then make our
equipment work with their dish. Call us. |
